Academic Decathlon is a state-wide competition scheduled for the first Sunday in February. This all-day event tests skills in language and literature, economics, math, science, history, the fine arts, essay writing and speaking. Medal and cash awards are earned.

A confidential, non-judgmental, loving support network that works to inspire and empower a community of acceptance of individuality. It is where being yourself is just that—a place to be you. Alliance meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month.

The Bowling Club meets at Alley Katz each Monday from 2:30-4:00 p.m. for three games of bowling. There is no commitment and students may come any Monday to bowl.

The Character Education committee works on projects to help members of the high school and community in times of need. They coordinate many drives for food, toiletry items, diapers, clothing and toys during the holiday season.

Annually each class at Westerly High School elects six officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Social Chairperson and Student Council Representative) to oversee its affairs. Working with the class advisors, these officers coordinate the fundraising, social activities and other affairs of the school. Class meetings are held periodically during the school year to conduct necessary class business.

The Color Guard/Dance Line is an auxiliary group of the marching band and performs at functions with the marching band. Participants are required to make a significant commitment to regular attendance at both practice and exhibition. Auditions are held each spring.

Raising awareness of environmental issues and finding new solutions to old habits. We strive to perpetuate the ideas of environmental club with fresh and helpful resolutions to bring into the future. We are accomplishing these goals through community service activities and social media where everyone has an opportunity to take part.

FBLA is the largest student organization aimed at helping students increase their knowledge of the business world through networking, running the school store, competitive events, State and National Leadership Conferences and community service projects.

Students will watch and discuss old and new “classic” films. Additionally, students will plan several events centered around their love for movies.

WHS’s creative writing group meets on Mondays from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in W226, writing and constantly seeking ways through which to improve and push through the boundaries of their writing.

The International Club exposes students to the cultures and languages of French, Italian and Spanish speaking countries of the world. Activities include fundraisers, museum visits, theater trips, ethnic restaurant visits, foreign language films and other activities that enhance awareness of foreign cultures.

The Math Team participates in the RI Math League and competes in four meets a year with 30+ schools from within the state. We compete in the areas of Arithmetic, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Probability & Statistics and Trigonometry.

Open to all students in grades 9-12, our focus is a range of outdoor activity trips, conducted after the school day has ended. Membership is $24/year. Activities include hiking, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing/rock gyms, hayrides, corn mazes, horseback riding, ice skating, skiing, rope courses/zip lines and more.

An after school club in its third year, the goals of the Robotics Club is to plan on improving our understanding and knowledge about Robotics, including learning how to code and write a command in programs, building robots to do a specific task and being as innovative as possible. With this knowledge we plan to compete in Robotics competitions while having fun along the way.

A way for students to explore science beyond the high school curriculum with an annual competition held at Rhode Island College, the Science Olympiad prepares students to compete against other Rhode Island high schools in various science-related events. Events include hands-on activities, building an apparatus, experimenting in a lab and problem solving.

Skills USA is for all students in our career and technical programs. The organization allows the excelling student to demonstrate learned technical skills and academic achievements. An organized national skill competition is held at the state, national and international levels.

SMILE is a pre-college science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) based after-school program that includes students statewide. SMILE aims to increase access to STEM for underrepresented students and encourage the pursuit of higher education. Through participation in SMILE, students will engage in STEM activities that combine art, design and communication to find creative and innovative solutions in a variety of problem-solving opportunities.

Student Ambassadors provide a friendly face for new students who enroll into WHS. Ambassadors deliver a detailed tour of the campus, highlighting classrooms, central locations, offices and personnel. Ambassadors answer pertinent questions about the schedule, student handbook, school events and offer advice about student life at WHS.

Student Council is open to any student with an interest in improving student life at the high school. Membership is open annually to all students. Officers are elected each year within the council and they oversee Student Council activities which include school wide projects, social activities and community service programs.

Students for Life provides outreach to the Women’s Pregnancy Outreach Center, hosts the Giving Tree in December, Life Week in March and Respect Life films throughout the year. They meet twice monthly on Mondays.

Table Tennis Club, the WHS Dog Paddles, is about having fun, learning and promoting table tennis for anyone who wants to play and have a good time. All ability levels are welcome from serious players that participate in tournaments to learn-as-they-go to players to learn official table-tennis rules.

The Westerly High School newspaper is published several
times during the school year. Students interested in journalism and student affairs are invited to contribute.

Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse is a peer leadership program in which high school varsity athletes pledge to remain alcohol and drug free. The athletes are trained to address younger students as positive role models. The athletes complete an application process and are chosen to be a member at the beginning of the school year.
